Chile, the helmet of salvation is getting a lot of press this week and celebrities are coming out the woodwork to put in their two cents. After a video of a few Black women wearing bonnets at an airport went viral a little more than a week ago, a debate erupted online about whether or not women should wear bonnets and head scarves in public.
The fact that everyone feels they can police what Black women wear is beyond me, but that didn’t stop several famous peeps from chiming in.
It wasn’t too long before aunty Mo’Nique popped up with a whole video over the weekend, speaking to her followers about where she sides on the issue.
“So when we got to the airport yesterday, I was like ‘okay baby let’s go get them in Jackson, M,’ and as we began to walk through the airport, I saw so many, actually too many to count, and too many for me to tap. But I saw so many of our young sisters in head bonnets, scarves, slippers, pajamas, blankets wrapped around them, and this is how they’re showing up to the airport.”
She continued to explain that the airport is not the only place where she has seen women dressed like that.
“The question that I have for you sweet babies, when did we lose pride in representing ourselves?” Mo’Nique asked.
She added, “I’m not saying you don’t have pride but the representation you’re showing, someone would have to ask you to know that you had it.”
You check out what she said below:
Tokyo Vanity apparently had enough and decided to take up for the bonnet-wearers Monday, explaining that people should really just mind their business. Tok also pointed out the irony in how Mo’Nique was dressed when she addressed the issue.
Chad Ochocinco pushed things a step further and let it be known he’s a whole fan of the bonnet!
