In the wake of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other unarmed Black men and women, social activism has been on the rise. Across the U.S., celebrities and citizens have been using their platforms to speak out against the injustices.
Rapper Lil Baby has been vocal and used his song “The Bigger Picture” to get his message across. In June of this year, the song was released on his album, “My Turn,” and became his highest-charting single ever. The song debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. It directly touched on the result of police brutality and how racism has affected both him and his community.
The music video put more power into the song’s message. Lil Baby was captured at a protest in his hometown of Atlanta. Lil Baby isn’t just rapping about the issues, but he went into his bag to really make a change. According to NPR, the rapper donated proceeds of the track to the Bail Project, the National Association of Black Journalists, and Breonna Taylor’s legal team.
Today on Twitter, he announced that he would be donating more money to the community. Baby tweeted, “I got 1.5 million dollars to donate off of “The Bigger Picture. “ I want the money to go where it’s needed.” He continued, “I don’t want to donate to just any organization, but I will be letting my fans know exactly where the money goes. Lawyers, Bonds, Play Grounds, Jobs, youth activities, things that WE can really benefit off of.”
Many Roommates flooded the comments excited about Baby’s announcement and commended him for staying true to social justice. Some even made suggestions on where he should donate.
