A pair of first graders at an Ohio school were allegedly able to gain access to the school’s gun and pick it up. This is probably why people think having guns in schools to combat gun violence is a bad idea.
The gun was reportedly inside of an unlocked case. The incident happened back in March at Highland Elementary School in South Bloomfield Township but it wasn’t brought to light until The Columbus Dispatch reported on it Friday.
One of the children involved is the grandson of the district’s transportation director, Vicky Nelson, who is reportedly part of the school’s concealed carry program. The program was launched last year in an effort to protect students from gun violence, which makes this situation quite ironic.
Nelson’s grandson and another child were in her office when Nelson reportedly stepped away to use the bathroom. That’s when the children were believed to have taken the gun from behind her desk and put it on top of her desk.
The mother of the other child involved, who is the district’s assistant transportation director, was the one to reportedly find the children alone in the room with the gun.
“I’m assuming that the child picked up the gun from behind the desk and had been holding it,” Superintendent Dan Freund told the newspaper.
A firearms trainer with a local sheriff’s office who helped train the faculty involved with the gun program told the paper that “what happened there was not consistent with the training provided, the policies and procedures or the conditions of being on the (concealed carry) team.”
“That’s a big no-no. It’s inexcusable,” he continued.
Following the gun incident, Nelson was reportedly removed from the school’s concealed carry program and placed on a brief suspension.
The district is currently reviewing the concealed carry program.
