There are instances in life where truth is stranger than fiction—and this is definitely one of them. We previously reported about the Brazilian gang leader who wore an elaborate disguise of his daughter’s face to escape prison, well there has been an unfortunate update just days after his arrest.
According to @Reuters, Clauvino da Silva, 42, was a convicted drug dealer serving a decades-long sentence when he attempted to flea prison by wearing a plastic mask, wig and glasses to look like his daughter so he could escape. That plan failed and early this morning Rio de Janeiro authorities made the discovery of da Silva hanging in his cell in the Bangu prison complex.
Prison officials say that “the inmate appears to have hung himself with a bed sheet,” while adding that a formal investigation has been opened. Sadly, inmates dying in Brazilian prisons is nothing new to a city with a huge prison overcrowding problem. Brazil is home to the world’s third largest prison system.
Earlier this month, at least 57 people died after a prison riot broke out in the northern state of Para. More than 50 inmates died in similar circumstances in May during prison riots in the northern state of Amazonas.
Brazil’s incarcerated population has surged massively within the last 30 years, totaling around 750,000 inmates.
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
