Issa celebration! The 2019 Emmy nominations were just announced and for all of you who were forever changed after watching Ava DuVernay’s masterpiece When They See Us, you’ll be happy to know that the Netflix limited series received a lot of Emmy love this year.
When They See Us which chronicles the heartbreaking case of the exonerated Central Park Five was not only a hit with fans, but also Emmy voters. As reported by @Variety, it scored major nominations in several categories, including Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie (Jharrel Jerome) and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Niecy Nash, Aunjanue Ellis.) In addition, Asante Blackk, Michael K. Williams and Marsha Stephanie Blake received nominations for their performances in When They See Us in the supporting categories.
However, the black excellence didn’t stop there, as the ground-breaking FX series Pose notched its first Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Billy Porter) and Outstanding Drama Series categories. ABC’s long-running hit Blackish scored a nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series (Anthony Anderson,) as did Showtime’s Black Monday for series star Don Cheadle.
Emmy favorite This Is Us returned to familiar territory with nominations in the categories of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Sterling K. Brown) and Outstanding Drama Series. Viola Davis is also wrapping up her series How To Get Away With Murder with a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
This year’s first-time nominees include When They See Us stars Jharrel Jerome, Asante Blackk and Aunjanue Ellis, and also Billy Porter of Pose.
The 71st annual Emmy Awards will air Sunday, September 22nd at 8PM on FOX.
