On Monday, news about a helicopter crash landing on top of a building in the midtown area of Manhattan in New York City. Now it is being reported, that the crash sparked a fire, and the pilot of the helicopter has been announced deceased.
According to CNN, the FDNY (Fire Department of New York) said, “The fire has been extinguished, and members continue to operate in response to fuel leaking from the helicopter.”
Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the helicopter made an emergency landing on the roof of the building, and the people inside felt the building shake.
Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the FAA, said that the pilot was the only person on board the twin-engine Agusta A109E helicopter when it crashed on the roof of 787 7th Avenue. The FAA traffic controllers did not handle the flight of the helicopter, and the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.
During the time of the crash, moderate to heavy rain was falling from the sky, with winds from the east at 9mph and the visibility at Central Park was down to 1.25 miles.
Governor Cuomo said that the incident brought back memories of 9/11 for New Yorkers.
He said, “If you’re a New Yorker, you have a level of PTSD from 9/11. And I remember that morning all too well. So as soon as you hear an aircraft hit a building, my mind goes where every New Yorker’s mind goes.”
Donald Trump also tweeted about the incident and said, “Phenomenal job by our GREAT First Responders who are currently on the scene. THANK YOU for all you do 24/7/365! The Trump Administration stands ready should you need anything at all.”
