Roommates, one of the biggest food trends at the moment is the move toward meatless meat! Some years ago, we would’ve laughed at the possibility, but many restaurants are thriving without meat, and KFC might be next on that list.
According to CNN, KFC is watching the plant-based trend closely, with possible plans to test out plant-based chicken in the near future.
“We are definitely looking at in an earnest and meeting with big suppliers of alternative proteins to understand the market and where it’s headed,” KFC’s President, Kevin Hochman said. “We’re aware it’s a growing industry, and we are watching this trend closely to learn as much as we can.”
Chicken is not the most popular plant-based protein on the market right now, as meatless burgers are dominating the industry. However, consumers are very interested in plant-based foods and the industry is growing.
CNN cites research from Euromonitor International predicting the meat-substitute market could grow from about $18.7 billion in 2018 to $23 billion in 2023.
Burger chains have increasingly hopped on the meatless meat trend, including Burger King, which we previously reported is rolling out a meatless Whopper this year. White Castle has also joined the trend selling meatless burgers.
McDonald’s has also expressed interest in the trend, but like KFC, is not completely sold on the idea of fake meat.
“We’re trying to understand it better,” McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook said. “We’re keeping a close eye on it,” noting that plant-based protein could just be a short term trend.
Are y’all jumping on the meatless meat wave too, Roomies?! Let us know in the comments!
