With #BlackHistoryMonth upon us, #AlphaKappaAlpha Sorority, Inc. will be showing love to institutions that promote #BlackExcellence to celebrate.
The organization announced an endowment fund of $10 million to be distributed to 96 accredited historically Black colleges and universities over the next four years. In February alone, the Ks will be donating $1.6 million and presidents of 32 HBCUs will get #FlewedOut to AKA headquarters to receive $50,000 for their institutions.
Among those schools are #LincolnUniversity, #NorfolkStateUniversity and #SouthernUniversity at New Orleans, according to @Essence. And the AKAs have been doing good deeds, being one of the most recent organizations to drop a major donation for #BennettCollege, which is currently at risk of losing its accreditation.
“As an HBCU graduate and someone who has dedicated my life’s work to the HBCU community, I personally know that the financial challenges of many institutions have an impact on student enrollment, retention and graduation rates…Implementing an endowment fund is a critical need and has been a priority for my administration since I took office last year,” said Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. International President Dr. Glenda Glover in a statement.
Donating to HBCUs is a great way to honor black history and it is also one of Glover’s initiatives while in office. The AKAs were founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University.
Glover believes that the role HBCUs have played in the organization’s 111-year history makes it “imperative that [Alpha Kappa Alpha] continue to invest in these treasured institutions.”
Recent data from the National Center for Educational Statistics show that a significant number of HBCUs have seen an increase in undergraduate student enrollment, which many attribute that growth to rising racial tension throughout the U.S.
We’re here for this service to the community and applaud the AKAs for supporting our colleges and universities!
