The University of Minnesota awarded the late singer Prince with an honorary degree on Wednesday.
According to Billboard, University President Eric Kaler and Regent Darrin presented the school’s highest honor, the Doctorate of Humane Letters, to Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson for her brother’s influence on music and his role in shaping the city of Minneapolis.
The university had been planning to present Prince with the honor before his shocking passing back in 2016.
Students from the university’s School of Music paid tribute to Prince by performing music associated with his career in a ceremony that took place Wednesday night. Michael Kim, the director of the university’s School of Music said to CNN, “Prince emulates everything a musician should be.”
Tyka Nelson added, “If you (poked) him, you would probably hear a sound of music. He was music, kind of like how God is love.”
