Nearly two years following the killing of Philando Castile, his legacy continues to live on and is helping the children in the school district in which he worked for.
According to the Huffington Post, a charity that was launched in Philando Castile’s honor has paid off the lunch debt for every student in the school district he worked for at the time of his death.
The charity “Philando Feeds The Children,” has paid off the lunch debt for every student in the 56 schools in the St. Paul Public School District, including J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet School, where Castile worked as a cafeteria supervisor.
An organizer for the charity said, “That means no parent of the 37,000 kids who eat meals at school need to worry about how to pay that overdue debt.”
Pam Fergus, who is the educator that launched the charity, said she dropped off a $35,000 check to St. Paul Public School District earlier this week.
At the inception of the charity, the goal was $5,000 but has since surpassed $117,000 in donations.
Fergus said, “Philando was famous for that. His mother told me that every day he would call her after leaving his job at J.J. Hill and talk about the kids. Another kid didn’t have the money in his account, so Philando would take $3 out of his pocket and buy that kid’s lunch for the day.”
It’s great to see Philando Castile’s memory being honored in such an amazing way.
