Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is rewarding a Varina High School senior with a college scholarship for bringing her GPA up to a 3.0.
The two had met last year at an annual benefit event for the Excel to Excellence Foundation, which was started by Sherman’s former Seattle teammate and friend Michael Robinson who is also a Varina graduate.
That’s when Sherman challenged Hershai James to make the honor roll and promised to personally fund her scholarship if she did.
And now, he’s making good on that promise, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “It goes back to knowledge is power and if you have knowledge you’re going to be as powerful as you ever want to be,” said the NFL star and Stanford alum.
James told the Richmond Times-Disptach that she “just felt so blessed to have been given the wonderful opportunity” and used the scholarship as motivation during her senior year. “Having something to look forward to helped,” she said. “It’s like saying my hard work and dedication had paid off.”
After graduation, James says she plans to attend Norfolk State University next fall to study business.
