What’s worse than having poisonous water? Being threatened for not paying for it!
More than 8,000 residents in Flint, Michigan have been threatened with foreclosure for failing to pay their water bills! But why would they when the city is entering its fourth year of their water crisis.
According to Business Insider, “More than 8,000 Flint residents received notices from the city threatening to impose tax liens for six months’ worth of unpaid water bills.”
We hear that threatened residents have a deadline of May 19th to get those bills paid or they will be taking a foreclosure risk. Some residents owe nearly $1k!
Even though their drinking water is in compliance with federal regulations, local officials have not announced it’s safe to drink.
Flint’s Mayor, Karen Weaver says she doesn’t agree with the he foreclosure threats.
“I understand it’s the law, but I don’t like it because of the circumstances. We are working to see if any changes or something can be done to help the residents affected by this.”
City officials aren’t here for her efforts though as the city is in dyer need of that money they’re losing out on. A simple solution might be to fix the issue–but I’m sure that’s been suggested before, right?
Any who Al Mooney, an official from the Flint treasury department said, “We have to have revenue coming in, so we can’t … give people water at the tap and not get revenue coming in to pay those bills.”
There you have it folks!
