Do you guys remember when we reported on N.W.A’s former manager, Jerry Heller suing the group, Eazy E’s estate, and the movies producers back in October for defamation? Well although Jerry died in August, his lawsuit is still very much alive.
In a nutshell, The suit originally claimed that he was poorly portrayed in Straight Out of Compton. More specifically, he claimed to not have ever withheld $75k from Ice Cube and that he most definitely never tricked Ice Cube and or Dr. Dre into signing faulty contracts. He also mentioned his book, which he believed producers got from for the movie and he never granted permission for that information to be disseminated.
The suit totals $110 million–$75 million in punitive damages and $35 million in compensatory damages.
Well that $110 million suit is still on the table according to Mickey Shapiro, Jerry’s lawyer, who also claimed that the movie was a major contributor to his death.
“We can still prove the defamation and we’re going to do that,” he said. “Other parts of the case aren’t affected by his death at all. His lawsuit against Tomica for violating a confidentiality agreement, that’s a fact. His lawsuit against everyone in the studios for taking material from his book, which he wrote years before, and lifting it out of the book and putting it into the movie and changing it for dramatic impact. He was the good guy. They made him out to be a horrible exploiter.”
