Sexyy Red Used To Be “Quiet” & “Shy” As A Child

Sexyy Red’s career thus far has been marked by her undeniably being herself, whether on stage, at an appearance, or anywhere in between. However, in a January interview with Billboard, the rapper — born Janae Wherry — reflected on her younger self. Furthermore, she revealed that she used to be a”shy” child.

“When I was little, I always knew [I was a star] because I was just different,” Sexyy explained. “I was worried. I was quiet. But everybody used to want to be my friend. I was pretty, my hair was real long, my mama knew how to dress me. Everybody used to just be flocking to me, but I was shy. I didn’t want to talk to nobody. I’ve always been that person for real.”

The Rapper Initially Thought She Would Grow Up To Be A Painter

While speaking with Billboard, the rapper explained that as a child, she initially believed she would grow up to be a painter.

“I used to think I was going to be a painter,” she said. “I used to design my Barbie dolls’ clothes. I used to be doing hair. I just was multitalented, so I knew I could do it, but I just didn’t know how.”

Sexyy Red Throws Down In The Kitchen

Outside of her skills with the paintbrush and mic, Sexyy Red also gets down in the kitchen. In January, the rapper also told the outlet that one of the things people may not know about her is that she cooks “real good.”

“All my friends — whenever I’m cooking, they come over [to] my house like, ‘You got some food?’ [and I be like] “Yep, I get them a plate.”

The Rapper Hates Wearing Makeup

During her sitdown with Billboard, Red explained that she “hate[s]” wearing makeup.

“I hate wearing makeup,” she explained. “I could have a photoshoot, video shoot [but] I’m not really gonna do no makeup — I’ll just do like a clear lip, some lashes, some eyeliner and just call it a day. I ain’t gonna put nothing on my cheeks — I don’t care how much my acne show. I just can’t do the makeup.”

Sexyy Red Sparked Her Friendship With Summer Walker Via Instagram

Amid her plethora of singles and hits, a frequent artist Red has often collaborated alongside is Summer Walker. According to Her Campus, the rapper previously told Complex that she and the singer sparked their friendship via Instagram.

“Me and her met on Instagram first, and she was f*****g with my music,” she explained. “I used to see her posting my songs all the time, and she thought I was funny, too … So she started following me. Then she invited me to her slumber party that she had with all her friends and stuff. And then we just kept hanging out after. Then we did a song later down the line. Now, if one of our kids have a birthday party, we’d be like, ‘OK, come to the party,’ or s**t like that. Now we’re cool.”

The Rapper Has Big Ambitions Outside Of Music

In a 2023 interview with Complex, Red opened up about her future ambitions outside of music. The rapper revealed that she ultimately wants to be on TV and launch multiple businesses.

“I want to get on TV. I want to have a makeup line. I want to sell clothes, [and] hair. I want some stores. I know I’m going to accomplish all of these,” she explained.
