It’s homecoming weekend for Clemson University. However, a party near campus ended with about 30 people being injured after the floor collapsed during the party.
According to ABC News, dozens of people were injured early Sunday when the floor collapsed during a party at an apartment building near Clemson University in South Carolina.
Officials said 30 people were taken to three area hospitals with injuries. Everyone was removed from the building and no one was trapped. None of the injuries suffered seemed to be life-threatening.
The collapse took place on the first floor of the building at the Woodlands of Clemson just before 12:30am. Police said the center of the floor of a clubhouse collapsed into the basement. The clubhouse had been rented out for a private party. Video footage from the scene showed people dancing around when the floor collapsed.
Raven Guerra, 20, said, “By the time I had put one foot out the door, I felt that something was weird and that’s when everyone just collapsed and the guy behind me disappeared. Everyone was on the floor and people were screaming and there was wood sticking up from the floorboards.”
Clemson University was celebrating its homecoming weekend and had won a football game against North Carolina State Saturday afternoon.
School officials found out about the incident early Sunday morning and said in a statement, “We’re continuing to gather information, and are encouraged by the initial reports of no life-threatening injuries.” They are also offering psychological services and counseling services to their students.
