Roommates, it’s been 25 years since 2Pac released his classic 3rd album “Me Against The World”—and we are still bumping it just like it dropped yesterday. Showing a more serious and introspective side to his music, ‘Pac was rewarded with much success with the album.
“Me Against The World” broke new ground for 2Pac and is legendary for a number of reasons. Following the releases of “2Pacalypse Now” and “Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.,” his third album “Me Against The World” was his first number one album, his first multi-platinum album and contained his first Top 10 & multi-platinum single with “Dear Mama.”
The album was also the first in Billboard history to debut number one while the artist was in jail, as 2Pac was incarcerated in 1995 when the album was released. The standout track from the album (and one of his best songs) “Dear Mama” also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance and “Me Against The World” was nominated for Best Rap Album. To date, it’s sold over 3 million copies.
There were three official singles released from the album, including the aforementioned “Dear Mama,” “So Many Tears” and the album’s final single “Temptations.” One of the things that many remember about these songs is that none of the videos actually have 2Pac in them because he was in jail, so a lot of his celebrity friends and his mother filmed the videos for him.
The title track from the album, also got radio play towards the end of its run and it was featured in the 1995 film “Bad Boys” as well. 2Pac said in the past that he made “Me Against The World” to silence his critics and show how great of a lyricist he was—and we think he definitely succeeded.
Roommates, what are your thoughts on this?
