My Super Sweet 16 was one of the most epic tv shows of the early 2000’s! We all got a glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous as they threw lavish and over-the-top birthday parties for their children. One of the most grande parties in the series was that of the Sugar Hill Records heir, Darnell Robinson (@thedarnellroy). He had a Coming to America themed birthday bash and had Rihanna as his date. I mean, who else could have gotten away with that?!
Well, we recently caught up with Darnell to see what he’s been up to since the show aired and let’s just say he’s got a lot going on. He’s been producing music practically all of his life and is about to release an album this year. In addition to that, he and his entire Sugar Hill family have a tv show debuting on Bravo next month called “First Family of Hip Hop.”
For all of you youngin’s out there, Sugar Hill Records–who is widely known for The Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” and “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five–was literally the first hip hop dynasty. Without them, there would be no Def Jam Records, no Roc-A-Fella Records, no Bad Boy Records–they laid the foundation for all of the hip hop labels that exist today! The Robinson Family is actually getting ready to film a biopic about Sylvia and Joe Robinson who founded the label.
Right now they’re looking at a gorgeous A-list celebrity to portray the matriarch of the Robinson family. We also spoke to Darnell about what to expect from the show as well as whether or not he and Rihanna are still cool. Find out all of the tea below!
