Mos Def has been living Cape Town, South Africa since 2013 but he hasn’t been the best resident after he was arrested earlier this year for allegedly overstaying a travel visa as well as trying to leave the country on a World Passport.
He got held up because the passport is not recognized as a legal travel document and he was detained for two days before being ordered to leave the country within 14 days, however he was still being held on bail in South Africa until now.
Thankfully, the rapper has recently apologized to the SA government for breaking immigration laws and they have granted him permission to finally leave!
In a statement, the home affairs department said, “(He) has unreservedly apologized to the Government of South Africa. The department is satisfied with the apology (and) will withdraw the charges against him.”
While this is certainly good news, Mos Def, who now goes as Yasiin Bey is now on the “undesirable persons” list with South Africa and has been banned from the country for five years! Yikes!
