Actress Shailene Woodley was recently arrested on criminal trespassing charges after peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline this morning. The Dakota Access Pipeline protests have been going on for a while between The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the federal government but it hasn’t made any major headlines as of recent.
The Native American tribe accused the government of destroying their native lands while building pipelines which the government believes is the safest way to help the U.S. conserve its own energy instead of taking it from other unstable countries around the world. The Tribe has filed a complaint citing, “the construction and operation of the pipeline… threatens the Tribe’s environmental and economic well-being, and would damage and destroy sites of great historic, religious, and cultural significance to the Tribe”, via CNN.
Protests began again today after the US Court of Appeals denied the injunction to halt the pipeline construction. Woodley had taken to Facebook to document the front lines of the pipeline protest.
“I don’t know if you guys just heard me, but I was walking back to my RV, which is right there so that we can go back to camp peacefully and they grabbed me by my jacket and said that I was not allowed to continue,” Woodley said via FB Live, “and they had giant guns and batons and zip ties and they’re not letting me go.”
E! News originally confirmed Woodley’s arrest but we have yet to hear any other update on the story. We will keep you posted. We’re just glad to see celebs using their platforms the right way no matter the consequence. Lets chat below.
