Nate Parker’s ‘The Birth of a Nation’ opened in theaters this weekend and it was expected to bring in $10 million but only pulled in $7.1 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film came in at No. 6 at the box office.
“This is a pretty pedestrian result,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Clearly, not all press is good press.”
This is a shock to many because the film did so well at the Sundance Film Festival and eventually sold to Fox Searchlight for a record breaking $17.5 million. The movie was soon overshadowed after rape allegations against Nate Parker and his co-director were brought up. Even though Nate and Jean were cleared off all charges that ultimately took the spotlight away from the movie and may be to blame for the disappointing box office numbers.
