While the Black community still fights to get our story of racial injustice heard, word that a Trayvon Martin book has been recently reported! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Trayvon’s parents have signed a book deal for the release of ‘Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin.’
Random House’s One World editor Christopher Jackson sat with The Hollywood Reporter where he revealed the news that he has been working on a book with his parents, Tracy and Sybrina Fulton. Apparently, they have been working on a deal since 2013.
“I’m doing a book with Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s parents [Rest in Power, out in January. Read more on the book deal here.] It’s amazing. Everyone who’s been reading the manuscript is in tears by the second chapter. It’s not just about the mournful story about losing a child, but it’s also how that moment ignited this global movement.”
The book is slated to drop on January 31st, which is symbolic since it would be just a few days before what would have been Trayvon’s 22nd birthday on February 5th. The book would also be a little less than a month shy of the 5th year anniversary of his death.
Trayvon was killed on February 26, 2012 after the infamous George Zimmerman shot him for what claims to be self defense even though Trayvon posed no threat since he was only armed with a bag of skittles and an Arizona drink. Zimmerman would later be acquitted on second degree murder charges in light of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
“It first brings Trayvon back to life as the full, three-dimensional, complex kid he was, through his parents’ eyes,” Jackson continued, “and then to the dark and confusing days following his death, which slowly transform into the blossoming of a powerful, historic movement for change and healing that we’re still watching unfold five years later. Everyone who’s been reading the manuscript is in tears by the second chapter.”
