On March 22nd, the hip hop community mourned the loss of A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg after he passed away from diabetes complications. While music is a way that we’ve immortalized some of our favorite artists, the city of New York is honoring the #FiveFootAssassin by renaming the iconic street that A Tribe Called Quest was founded on.
According to OkayPlayer, Phife’s management team sent out a text confirming that the mayor was signing off on the tribute this week. “Just wanted to let every one know that the New York mayors office just called me and said the mayor is signing the bill to co-name Linden Blvd @192 to Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor way,” the text read. It will be completed this Wednesday at City Hall in Lower Manhattan!
Linden Blvd is a special place to the members of A Tribe Called Quest. It’s where he and Q-Tip founded the group in 1985 before adding memebers Jarobi White and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The rapper paid tribute to the street in songs such as “Steve Biko” and “Check the Rhime” where he attributes learning how to rhyme in the area.
Rest in paradise, Phife Dawg!
