TSR Positive Images: Demi Lovato Urges Politicians To Make Mental Health A Priority During Moving DNC Speech

As we’re still swooning over Michelle Obama’s powerful speech at last night’s Democratic National Convention, pop singer Demi Lovato gave a very moving speech in which she opened up about her battle with mental illness. In doing so, she urged politicians to make mental health a priority in this country in hopes of preventing a society of mentally unhealthy people.

“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness, but I’m lucky: I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility,” said the singer who has previously been treated for bipolar disorder and anxiety. “Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help,” she continued, “either because they fear the stigma or they can not afford treatment.”

In order for those in need to get access to healthcare, Lovato said that politicians need to support legislation that grants it. “Untreated mental illness can lead to devastating consequences including suicide, substance abuse and long-term medical issues,” she said. “We can do better. Every one of us can make a difference.”

Demi has had a few challenging moments pertaining to her own public battle with mental health over the years, but vows that she is living through her illness, so others should feel empowered to do so as well. “I stand here today as proof that you can live a normal and empowered life with mental illness,” the ‘Confident’ singer added. “I’m proud to support a presidential candidate who will fight to ensure all people living with mental health conditions get the care they need to lead fulfilling lives. That candidate is Hillary Clinton. Let’s make her the next president of the United States of America.”

Roommates, do any of you battle with mental illness? Do you feel represented enough during this election?
