We’ve reported a while back on how the Birkin bag has become a highly coveted and profitable gold-mine in the fashion industry but who knew that it would be making literal history!
According to CNN, an auction was held on May 30, under auction house Christie, located in Hong Kong. A special Asian collector won a bid for the most rare white-matte Himalayan crocodile leather bag for a whopping $300,168… making it the most expensive bag ever sold! This bag also comes decked out with 18k white gold and diamond embellishing.
“The diamond pieces created by Hermes are exceptional, but none are nearly as iconic as the Himalaya,” Christie’s said in a press release. “It is believed that only one or two of the Diamond Himalayas are produced each year, globally, making it one of the lowest production runs for handbags.”
This buy beats out the fuscia diamond-encrusted Hermes bag that was sold at an auction for $220,000 last year.
“By not telling ladies how many are manufactured in a year, the idea that these are scarce makes them more desirable. It is human nature to want what others cannot get,” New York appraiser, Helaine Fendelman said.
We know diamonds are a girl’s best friend but the Birkin is definitely giving it some crazy competition! Lets chat below!
