Weed Revenue In Colorado Helps One City Address Its Homelessness Issue

Well it looks like the legalization of marijuana is doing more good than bad in some states… just ask Colorado. Word is the money that the city of Aurora got from marijuana sales is helping them take care of their homeless community.

According to the Aurora Sentinel, city council members voted to distribute at least $1.5 million out of the $4.5 million they received in sales tax to homeless organizations.

It is also reported that $220,000 will go to Colfax Community Network, a nonprofit that provides low-income families living in motels and apartments with resources which include clothing, food, toiletries, diapers as well as education on other community services.

“The Colfax Community Network is in extremely dire straits in that they do not have funds to continue operating,” said Nancy Sheffield, director of Aurora neighborhood services.

Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan also shared his thoughts on the decision:

“I believe there’s a value to it beyond just what it does,” Hogan said of the nonprofit. “That value is that it’s an organization that’s been around for years. Organizations that have been around for years tend to catch the eye of funding foundations. The problem with Colfax Community Network is, in my view, there were a lot of well-intentioned people who had no idea how to go out and get money. That’s why they’re in trouble now. Saving it makes sense to me.”
