Will Smith’s accused killer settled lawsuit with NOLA Police over fathers Fatal shooting

Cardell Hayes, the man accused of murdering former New Orleans Saint player, Will Smith, has had his fair share of crossings with the judicial system.

According to NOLA, Cardell won a lawsuit back in 2011 against the city of New Orleans. The lawsuit alleged that Cardell’s father, who was mentally ill, was shot and killed by New Orleans police officers. The lawsuit was originally filed in June 2006, which was a little over five months after the father was pepper sprayed and shot nine times by the officers.

Cardell was 18 at the time and was also seeking an initial 4 million dollar suit. No one is really too certain on how much he exactly won because the latest court documents suggest that there was a negotiation on the table from the city offering $80k for both Cardell and his sister Tyeice. Additionally they countered sued for $125k a piece. Five days prior to the suits scheduled trial date, in September 2005, it was settled for an undisclosed amount.

Here’s a plot twist: the officer that was eating lunch with Will Smith just hours before the traffic accident with Cardell, is one of the officers associated with his father’s murder.
